“The Shack” has been a Glen Rock tradition for almost 50 years; it is a low cost recreational summer program for children in grades 2 – 8. The program operates out of two small buildings (hence the name, “The Shack”) located at opposite ends of town. The program is operated by counselors who are overseen by the Director of Parks & Recreation. Activities include board games, arts & crafts, and old-fashioned schoolyard games such as wiffleball and kickball.
The counselors also schedule specials days that may include bubble gum blowing contests, knock hockey tournaments and even water balloon fights. The program also sponsors trips to local bowling alleys and movie theaters and has weekly pizza days. The goal of The Shack program is to offer Glen Rock children an option that has less structured activity than traditional full day camps and yet enough activity to keep the days of summer fun and exciting. In addition, it gives the children a great way to stay connected to their friends from school and meet new friends!
The Shack is open from the end of June through the first week in August each summer. Specific 2012 dates will be posted on this website as soon as they become available.
In cases of inclement weather, the Director may choose to close The Shack. Please call the Fields Hotline at (201) 251 – 8494 for announcements regarding closures due to inclement weather.
One important note about The Shack: The Shack is not a typical day camp that closely monitors camper whereabouts. The Shack counselors assume that children who attend The Shack are capable of following the program’s rules and will stay within the confines of The Shack area. Parents know their child best and will know if their child is capable of having a successful, positive experience in that environment.
To sign your children up for the The Shack, please download the registration form below and mail it with your payment to Mark Barone, Director of Parks & Recreation, 1 Harding Plaza, Glen Rock NJ 07452. Registrations may also be handed in to The Shack personnel.
The registration fees for the 2011 season are $80 for 1 child, $160 for 2 children, and $200 for 3 or more children. Please contact Mark Barone (201) 670-3951 with any questions.
The Shack has several scheduled special events in addition to the Bowling Trips and Pizza Days each Friday.
